Wireless USB Prospects Looking Up

Although it made a sluggish debut last year, Wireless USB (WUSB) devices are expected to surpass the 190 millionth mark by 2012, according to new findings from In-Stat.

The first devices with WUSB technology shipped in 2007 but its appeal is currently hampered by the high price of the underlying UWB silicon says the high-tech market research firm.

However, this trend will is expected to change says In-Stat.

"The beginnings of a new wireless ecosystem have launched, and should lead to increased shipments in the years ahead," says Brian O'Rourke, In-Stat analyst.

"Ultimately, UWB and WUSB will succeed because they solve problems that no other technology can; the ability to transmit large amounts of data from one device to another with relative power efficiency."

WUSB are targeted at PCs, PC peripherals, consumer electronics and mobile phones and its technology is included in notebook PCs and hub and dongle solutions.

Primary competition for WUSB is expected to come from other WiMedia-based standards, as well as technologies such as Wi-Fi.
